Not sure which Contraception treatment you need?
What is Brevinor?
Brevinor is an oral contraceptive that belongs to a group of combined hormonal contraceptives called ‘the pill’. It’s over 99% effective in protecting against pregnancy when taken correctly, and can reduce excess body hair and improve acne as well as improving menstrual symptoms.
The Brevinor pill delivers synthetic oestrogen and progestogen to your body, overwriting the natural hormone balance in your reproductive system to make it almost impossible to conceive.
There are so many contraceptive pills to choose from that it’s important you complete a consultation with one of our doctors. This will allow a doctor to assess your medical history and understand whether Brevinor is the best type of pill for you. If they think the Brevinor pill would be safe for you to take, they’ll write you a prescription and you’ll receive your medication via free next-day delivery.
What are the benefits of using Brevinor?
Brevinor, like a couple of pills with similar active ingredients, is known to treat excess body hair and improve skin condition.
Other benefits of the Brevinor pill can be applied to combined oral contraceptives in general. These include regulated periods, less period pain and a shorter duration of bleeding.
The contraceptive pill is one of the most effective methods of contraception and all you have to do is take a pill once a day.
How does it work?
The Brevinor pills administer a synthetic oestrogen called ethinylestradiol and a synthetic progestogen called norethisterone, which override the body’s existing hormone balance.
Brevinor causes the mucous in the cervix to thicken, making it harder for sperm to reach the womb and a potential egg. It also tricks the body into thinking ovulation - when a mature egg is released into the womb - has already occurred so the ovaries don’t release an egg. Finally, Brevinor prevents the lining of the womb from thickening.
These three actions mean that it would be almost impossible for sperm to reach the womb. If this does however happen, it’s almost impossible that the sperm will find an egg to fertilise. And even then, if the sperm does reach an egg and fertilise it, it’s nearly impossible for the fertilised egg to develop into a foetus because it can’t implant itself in the womb lining.
Who can take it?
If you’re a healthy non-smoker under 35 you should be able to use Brevinor safely. However, many conditions could prevent you from being able to take the Brevinor pill. These include angina; a history of blood clots; heart valve disease; an irregular heartbeat; high cholesterol levels and cancer involving the genital tract.
How do you take Brevinor?
You should take one Brevinor pill at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a seven-day break (when you’ll still be protected from pregnancy). This allows an even dose of hormones to remain in your body, and gives your body the chance to expel hormones in a withdrawal bleed.
If you forget one or two pills you should take the forgotten one as soon as you remember and continue with the pack. You’ll still be protected during this time.
If you forget three or more pills you’ll need to throw the missed pills in the bin and start taking a Brevinor pill as usual. You will no longer be protected from pregnancy, so you’ll need to use another contraceptive, such as a condom, for seven days.
Are there any side effects?
There are a number of side effects that can be caused by Brevinor. The most common side effect associated with the Brevinor pill is changes to your weight, though the side effects associated with the combined pill, such as nausea, vomiting, headaches and water retention, may also be experienced.
It’s uncommon, but some women do experience hair thinning or growth, drowsiness, itching, fatigue and tiredness.
Any side effects should become milder with time, but you should see your doctor if you’re experiencing side effects that concern you.
