Femulen
What is Femulen?
Femulen is a progestogen-only pill which is similarly as effective in preventing pregnancy as the combined pill, but the absence of oestrogen means the risk of side effects is reduced and more women can use the mini pill.
The Femulen pill is the only contraceptive pill that’s suitable for vegans. It’s not made from animal-derived ingredients, though you should note that every single contraceptive on the market has been tested on animals at some point.
Femulen is no longer available to buy at HealthExpress. However, if you are unable to use oestrogen, if you can’t tolerate the combined pill or if you’re vegan, you may be able to buy another mini pill contraceptive treatment here at HealthExpress. You’ll need to complete a consultation which will be reviewed by one of our registered doctors, who will assess if mini pills like Cerazette or Noriday are safe for you to use. Depending in which pill you decide to buy or the mini pill most suitable for you, we’ll send it to you via free next-day delivery.
What are the benefits of using Femulen?
Femulen is the only contraceptive that doesn’t use animal-derived ingredients.
The Femulen pill can be taken by a wider population of women; if you’re over 35, smoke, are breastfeeding or have a history of blood clots or heart disease you could use this mini-pill.
The absence of oestrogen means that oestrogen-related side effects are reduced, such as water retention, breast tenderness and nausea.
How does it work?
It’s important to understand how conception works, in order to understand how Femulen prevents this. In order for fertilisation to take place, sperm must find an egg. This fertilised egg needs to implant itself in the womb lining so it can use the nutrients to grow and fuel its development, which is called conception.
Each Femulen pill contains an artificial oestrogen called etynodiol. This works to prevent pregnancy at every stage, by thickening cervical mucous to stop sperm from reaching the womb and stopping the womb lining from thickening so a fertilised egg can’t develop.
Femulen can prevent ovulation in some women; it can trick the body into thinking an egg has already been released so there is nothing for sperm to fertilise.
Who can use it?
Women aged over 18 may be able to use the mini pill, especially if they’ve experienced negative reactions to combined pills or if they can’t use oestrogen because they’re breastfeeding, over 35, smoke or have a history of blood clots, for example.
Mini pills like the Femulen pill, are not suitable if you have liver cancer, gallbladder disease, diabetes or if you’re about to have major surgery with prolonged immobilisation.
You should answer all questions accurately and honestly, and detail any medication you’re using so one of our registered doctors can properly assess if mini pill contraceptive treatments are safe for you to use.
How do you use Femulen?
You must take a Femulen pill every single day; there’s no seven-day break like with combined pills. You need to take a pill at the same time every day, because taking a pill just three hours late will stop it from working effectively.
If you forget to take a pill, and it’s longer than three hours after you should have taken one, you will no longer be protected against pregnancy. In this case, you’ll need to use a condom or other barrier contraceptive to ensure you don’t conceive. You should take the pills as usual and use further contraception for two days.
Are there any side effects?
Femulen is known to cause side effects such as weight changes, which can be common. Other side effects experienced by a few women include changes to libido, dizziness, increased hair growth and increased fibroids.
If you do experience side effects, they should become milder as your body adjusts to the hormone.
