Accueil / Qsymia

Qsymia is one of the newest prescription treatments to be approved for the purpose of treating obesity. It combines the two active ingredients phentermine and topiramate (extended release) to effectively aid weight loss. Clinical trials have proven that this medication is both safe and effective, with users reporting an average of 8.4% of their body weight lost after a year long course of treatment.

This medication has only recently been approved by the FDA in the United States, and it is expected to be approved and licensed in Europe either later this year or in early 2013. Until this time, patients who believe they would benefit from the assistance of prescription medication to lose weight may wish to consider Xenical, which is currently the only approved weight loss medication in the UK.

Does Qsymia have any benefits?

Clinical trials have proved that this medication is very effective as a weight loss aid. During these trials, participants lost an average of 22lbs and their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were significantly decreased. It is clear from this data that Qsymia can have a very positive effect on a user's health. The combination of the two active ingredients means that it provides a more comprehensive benefit as it works in two different ways to treat obesity.

How does this medication work?

The first active ingredient in Qsymia is called phentermine. It is an appetite suppressant which works to increase the amount of leptin in the blood. Leptin is a type of hormone which helps regulate appetite. The increase in leptin is due to the phentermine triggering the release of a chemical called norepinephrine in the brain. The second active ingredient is called topirmate (Topomax) and it works to make you feel fuller more quickly, while also making food less appetising and burning calories faster.

Can anyone take Qsymia?

This medication is only intended to be used by either those who have a BMI of 30 or above or those with a BMI of 27 or above and who also have an underlying health condition. It should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. People with certain health conditions, such as thyroid problems or glaucoma, will likely be advised to seek an alternative treatment.

How to take Qsymia

This medication should be taken alongside a healthy lifestyle which should include consuming a healthy diet and undertaking plenty of regular exercise. Failing to do this will mean the medication is not effective. Generally, the recommended dosage of this medication is a single pill per day, taken either with or without food.

Possible side effects

All prescription medications carry a small risk of side effects, and Qsymia is no exception. However, clinical trials have proven that this is a very safe medication for the majority of users. Any side effects that do occur are likely to be very mild and only temporary. Potential mild effects include trouble sleeping, constipation and a numbness in the extremities. More serious effects are very rare and would require medical attention. These include seizures and changes in blood sugar levels.

Can I buy Qsymia online?

As Qsymia has only recently been approved in the US, it is not yet possible to buy the medication online. We anticipate that Qsymia will be available to buy online at some point during 2013. Until then we will continue to update HealthExpress with any new information regarding this or any other weight loss medication as soon as it is available. There is only one medication currently available in the UK to treat obesity, and that is Xenical. You can find more information about the different options for weight on our dedicated obesity treatment page.
