Not sure which Contraception treatment you need?
What is TriNovum?
TriNovum is a triphasic pill, which means the dosage of hormones administered to your body increases three times during your cycle. This allows your levels of progestogen to increase in a way that mimics your natural cycle, reducing the risk of certain side effects of monophasic pills, such as missed periods.
TriNovum is a combined pill that’s over 99% effective in protecting against pregnancy. It also improves cyclic symptoms and reduces the risk of developing headaches or depression as a side effect.
If you think the TriNovum pill would be the right contraceptive for you, you can buy it online from HealthExpress.eu if you complete a consultation. This will be reviewed by one of our registered doctors who will assess whether it’s safe for you to use.
What are the benefits?
The TriNovum pill releases three different strengths of hormones at different stages of your cycle, which reduces cyclic symptoms such as water retention. TriNovum is also the only contraceptive pill which maintains or increases your libido.
The TriNovum pill delivers less oestrogen to the body which reduces the risk of developing certain oestrogen-related side effects such as headaches and depression.
How does it work?
There are three different types of tablets in each TriNovum pill packet. The amount of oestrogen remains the same in every pill, but the level of oestrogen increases during the week.
TriNovum contains an artificial oestrogen called ethinylestradiol and an artificial progestogen called norethisterone. They work together to change the environment of the reproductive system to such an extent that it’s almost impossible to conceive.
This is done in three key ways: oestrogen stops your ovaries from releasing a mature egg, so there’s nothing to be fertilised; progestogen thickens the mucous in the cervix, so it’s difficult for sperm to reach the womb; and the progestogen also prevents the womb lining from thickening, so a fertilised egg can’t develop.
Who can take TriNovum?
If you’re aged between 18 and 35, you don’t smoke and you’re healthy, you have a good chance of being able to use the TriNovum pill. However, certain health conditions could mean it’s unsafe for you to start using TriNovum. These include anaemia, decreased kidney function, heart failure or a history of gallstones.
Certain medications may stop TriNovum from working properly, such as primidone, rifampicin and topiramate. The TriNovum pill can also increase the blood levels of certain medication, for example melatonin, selegiline and tizanidine, increasing the risk of developing side effects.
For these reasons, it’s important that you tell a doctor if you’re using any medication and make sure they know your medical history.
How do you use TriNovum?
You must take TriNovum in the correct order, to ensure you’re protected throughout your cycle. You’ll start with the TriNovum pill that contains the lowest dose of progestogen and continue, in the order directed by clear markings on the packet, and finish with the seven pills containing the most progestogen.
You will only take pills for the first 21 days of the month, after which you’ll have a seven-day break. You’ll still be protected from pregnancy during this time, but you will probably experience a withdrawal bleed.
Are there any side effects?
There are a few side effects associated with the TriNovum pill. The most common is irritability, with uncommon side effects including mood changes, a rash and hair loss or growth.
Triphasic pills were developed to reduce the side effects that are associated with contraceptive pills, and this is achieved by administering a lower dose of oestrogen over the course of a cycle.
You may experience side effects associated with the combined contraceptive pill, such as nausea and breast tenderness, however these should be minimal with TriNovum. If you do develop side effects, they will be mild in nature and should disappear as your body becomes used to the hormones.
